About komandoo

Background

Komandoo belongs to Shaviyani atoll which is located in the north of the Maldives, the national island code is C-13. According to the recent statistics the population of the island is 1667 and which is very high when compare to the other populations of the atoll comparatively and at the same time, the land size is just 6 acres which is known as largest population with the smallest island last in the atoll.

Among the inhabitants of komandoo, there are signs of other clusters, the people in the island include the inhabitants from Mathi-Komandoo and Keekimini, and it was believed that the reason for the migration of those islands is caused by the disturbance of Malabaries during the time Portuguese invasion according to the ancient history.

The major occupation of the locals is fishing, and the fisherman makes a quite reasonable income from fishing and enjoys good living comparatively.

Though the population growth is controlled, it has stroked the social harmony by over-crowding in the island. The minor and the major obstacle faced for the locals and the development activities are land tribulations, insufficient land. As a result, enormous number of crisis has started arising. Huge number of households is located at the shore, and the shoe has to be protected to live at normal life. Groundwater-lance of the island was totally contaminated. Waste management system is miserable, all the domestic waste are dumping into the sea. Even though the situations are in such condition, the beloved people of the island had the will and made the difference, no halt was made to their commitment. As a consequence, the people of the island have made number of remarkable achievement with support and assistance of the government and other aid agencies such as UNP

Information Technology

With the initiation of the Island Development Committee of Komandoo has implemented an IT center with the aim of providing Internet, telephone and fax service to the community in the year 2003. And today the services of the IT center have increased and now it has implemented telephone exchange and a cable TV network though out the island. Intercom and incoming, out going call can be made from each house. Next, providing intranet and internet service to the households is on the go.

A BRIEF SUMMURY OF THE PROJECT.

The main idea of starting this project at komandoo is to provide intranet service for the students’ community and the people of this island to keep abreast of current affairs. They can use the E-Library, E-Video, Internet browsing etc, comfortably sitting at home. This project will definitely will help the students as well as the people to motivate for the modern education and to pursue their studies too. Under this project people will be given training to provide this valuable service for ever with the help of the I.T.C through the telephone exchange. We hopefully will start it in the month of July, 2007 and it will be over in July 2008.
REASONS.

• Most of the students badly need this service because every year a large number of students sit for the Cambridge Examination and also most of them are not well off to buy costly books and magazines. They will gain the good results in the exam if they have an access to the net and E-Library.
• Student will have an opportunity of acquiring more knowledge after completing their education.
• Students especially girls who don’t have a chance of pursuing their higher studies can surf the net. It will help to know about the jobs and educational opportunities.
• This facility will be certainly a great boon for the business people to keep in touch with other business men as well as different islands in our country to order or buy things through E-mail, internet browsing etc. Lack of these communication facilities will be a handicap for our islanders. It will bring a tremendous change for everyone.
• The present younger generation of this island who completed their O’ Level exams at Sh. Atoll Education Centre need the net facilities to know what is going around this world. Now they feel that they are completely cut off from the rest of the world. This net facility will give them a permanent solution.
